Summer Yoga Fundraiser Supports S.T.E.A.M. Learning in the Library

Amazon Fire Tablets purchased to be used with OSMO learning games.

This past summer, thanks to volunteer Julie Vanderwal, we were able to offer a variety of yoga and fitness related programs to residents and non-residents of Hastings Highlands as a fundraiser.

Julie, who cottages in the area every summer, generously donated her time to teach Yoga Stretch, Yoga Nidra, and Kids Yoga as an open class, as well as reflexology by appointment to those interested. All proceeds from the classes were donated in full to the library, as well as a percentage of the proceeds from the reflexology appointments.

With some of the money donated, we were able to purchase two brand new Amazon Fire 8 tablets. These Amazon Fire tablets can be used with the award-winning educational app OSMO, which is part of our S.T.E.A.M. (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) learning cart at the library for kids and youth. Each OSMO Kit has a different educational focus, such as math, spelling, identifying patterns, and coding, and requires the app to play. For a demonstration of what the app is capable of and what types of games are available, check out OSMO's official youtube channel here.

On behalf of the library and our patrons, we would like to thank Julie for her continued generosity and support of the library, as well as those who participated in her classes. And if you haven't had a chance to check out our S.T.E.A.M. cart in the library yet, what are you waiting for? It's available any time during library hours for kids, youth, and adults alike to check out, and we hope to continue expanding it in the future.
